How To Throw A Star Wars Birthday Party

12 Mar

Last month was my sons 5th birthday.  After weeks of him changing his mind about what kind of party he wanted to have (everything from Ninja Turtles to Transformers to Monster Trucks) he settled in on star wars.  This was especially exciting for the wife and I, because we both love Star Wars.  Naturally I let my dorky dad side take over and went straight to Google to start planning.  I found tons of ideas for party favors and games and may have gone a little overboard!  Here’s what worked, and what didn’t for us.

Invitations

The invitations took the most work.  I wanted to make my own and with a minimal amount of computer skills you can too.  The first thing I needed was a photo editing program.  if you already have one, great.  If not I used a free one called Paint.net.  It’s fairly easy to use and you don’t need to do anything too complex with it.  I downloaded a font called Starvader and installed it.  I used Microsoft Publisher to make the invitation, and I used a free PDF converter called Cute PDF to convert it to a PDF for emailing.

Now I’m ready to make my invitation.

First I needed to download some images.  We all know that Google is the king of search, but I have found that bing image search does a really nice job of finding images that I use for invitations, cards, websites and blogs.  I went to bing.com, clicked images at the top and began my search.  I ran a search for starfield and found a couple nice images to use for a background.  Then I ran a search for Jedi Training Academy Logo, lightsabers, and various Star Wars vehicles and downloaded all of them into a folder so I could decide what I was going to use.  I decided to go with the training academy logo and two of the lightsabers.

Step 2.  I went to my photo editor paint.net and I opened the training academy logo.   I used the magic wand to select some of the white space and then the delete key to remove it.  You may have to play around with the zoom and do it a few times to get all the white space out.  When your done do a save as and change the file type to .png.  You have to save files in that format for the transparency part to work.  I did the same for the two lightsabers.

Step 3.  Microsoft Publisher.  I opened a new project and set the page size for 4×6 landscape.  I put the starfield image as a background.  If you want it to print without a border you need to extend the image beyond the page.   I inserted my Training Academy Logo and my two lightsabers, and I added the details in the Starvader font.  We printed invites for his friends on photo paper (which will kill your black ink cartridge) and we saved the file as a pdf to send out to family.

Party Events and Activities

Make your own lightsaber

This was the hit of the party, and surprisingly easy and cheap.  I wish I could take credit for it, but I found it on Google.  I went to Lowes and bought eight pieces of foam pipe insulation, grey duct tape, and neon purple, neon green, neon red and neon blue duct tape.  The night before the party I cut the foam pipe insulation in half.  I took the grey duct tape and made handles of various decoration.  As the kids arrived at the party their parents helped them use the neon duct tape to make very soft very creative lightsabers of their own that they could use at the party and take home as party favors.

Battle of Geonosis

Now that all the young Jedi have their own lightsaber they are ready to battle the droid army!  We bought a battery powered bubble blower from Target for around $10.  I’m going to let you know now it does not come with enough bubbles, and don’t put the bubble mix into it until you have moved it to where you want it.  That being said it blows a nice stream of bubbles that the new Jedi can battle with their lightsabers.

Attack The Death Star

They make Star Wars themed piñatas but they are way overpriced.  They make a soccer ball piñata for like $8.  Use spray paint to paint the ball grey , then add some black paint to make some lines and you now have a death star ready for attack.  Obviously your foam lightsabers won’t get the job done breaking this thing.  The hard plastic ones will get it done eventually.  A Piñata stick or a broom handle can be decorated to look like a lightsaber pretty easily as an alternative.

Events and activities that didn’t work for us

  • Pod Race.  I made a pod racer out of some computer boxes and Styrofoam.  We had gone to a Star Wars day at the library and they had a bunch of them made that the kids stepped into, picked up and raced with.  I spent about two hours on mine, and it ended up in the trash.
  • Obstacle course.  The pod race was going to be part of our Jedi Training obstacle course.  We were going to have them do three “training” events to become a Jedi.  When they completed their training they would get their……
  • Jedi Robes.  I saw this on another blog and it looked really awesome.  Each kid got to decorate his or her own Jedi robe at the end of the training.  We just didn’t have the time or the organization to pull it off.  What can I say we went a little over the top!

Jedi Food

We had three Jedi themed foods at our party.

Frozen Gogurt Lightsabers

Gogurt right now is making Star Wars themed Gogurt with Lightsabers on the back.  We froze a couple of boxes overnight and put them out on the table.

Lightsaber Pretzel Rods

These were a huge hit with parents and kids alike.  At the party store my wife bought colored chocolates.  We melted them in the microwave and then brushed them over pretzel rods.  When they hardened they were fantastic looking (and tasting) lightsaber pretzels.

AT-AT Cake

I have a hidden talent,  I can draw on cakes.  I may not be cake boss material, but for my purposes I’m pretty happy with my work.  I’m not sure where it came from,  I’ve never been overly artistic in that sense, but I can draw on cakes.  I looked up a picture of an AT-AT online.  I drew it one on a piece of paper, then I drew it on this cake.  I used a black spray icing to give the frosting a more metallic  color.  I used a black gel pen to do the outline, then filled it in with some frosting that we had colored in a bowl.  I then went back with the black gel pen and added some detail work, and I used black red and blue gel pens to make the lightsabers around the edges.

If you’re planning a Star Wars party I hope you find some of this helpful.  Remember (as I should have) that the younger the kids are the less you need to try to cram into the party.  Have fun, and may the force be with you!!!!!!!!!

What Happened To The Television Dad?

18 Nov

What happened to Dads on television?  I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now.  Where are the great television Dads of my youth?  I don’t mean to imply that it is the job of the entertainment industry to provide us with role models, obviously that’s not where your role models should come from.  I’m just trying to figure out how we let the role of fathers become so marginalized in pop culture?

Somewhere along the line we decided as a society that we were tired of seeing strong and wise fathers.  Somewhere along the line we decided the loveable loser who was scared of his wife was a better representation of what modern fatherhood looks like.  What started out as a caricature turned into the standard formula and the industry has rarely looked back.

I’m in my thirties, so my childhood had some great TV Dads.

Parenting Tips From Superheroes

9 Nov

Superheroes are a pretty big deal at my house.  The boys have a large selection of superhero shirts, costumes and water bottles.  I let them watch the old cartoon intro’s on YouTube.  We read the super friends and super hero squad books.  Even the two year old runs through the house trying to sing the theme song to Batman.

Their favorite game to play lately as you may have guessed is a superhero game.  They take all the cushions and pillows off the couch and use them to battle the bad guy (me of course).  My oldest son will always stop in the middle of these epic battles and run to his bedroom to change his superhero shirt.  Batman needs to tag out so Spiderman can use his web.  Spiderman was trapped, so Captain America had to get his shield.

I’m amazed by their use of imagination.  I’m also amazed that after all these years the same characters are still this popular with kids!  It got me thinking about how to apply this to parenting.  Obviously we don’t have a super power, but there are several themes and lessons that Today’s Dads can take from superheroes.

Everything I know about parenting I learned from a superhero: Continue reading

Kids and Restaurants-A Dad’s Guide To Surviving the Stares

3 Nov

I took my boys out for dinner last night.  Nothing fancy, just an order at the counter and they bring the food to you at your seat kind of establishment.  Dinner time can be a little tricky as it is, and if you have ever taken a two year old and a four year old to a restaurant you know that you’re rolling the dice.

I thought they behaved themselves pretty well.  When you consider that they’ve been on a three day sugar bender since Halloween I’d say they were fantastic!  Toward the end though they started to lose it a little, and when we were getting ready to leave the two year old started to cry because we weren’t going to take his lemonade in the car.

And then you start to feel it………

Can't You Keep Those Kids Quiet?

All parents know the feeling I’m talking about.  The judging eyes.  The condescending looks.  The overdramatic sigh with the shaking of the head.  Why can’t he keep that kid quiet!?! Continue reading

Dads and Halloween

31 Oct

image

Halloween is a special time of year to be a Dad, especially to younger children.  For your children it really allows them to explore their imagination and use their creativity.  For parents it let’s you tap into your own fond childhood memories while creating new memories for the next generation.  I didn’t realize until I had kids just how many activities there were to do at Halloween; pick out costumes, pick out pumpkins, fall festivals, trunk or treat, painting pumpkins, carving pumpkins, roasting pumpkin seeds, decorating the house, and of course trick or treating.

One of my favorite Halloween memories was working with my own Dad to make a Halloween outfit that looked like a coke can.  To this day I think it was one of the coolest costumes I’ve ever seen, and I loved that we did it together.

I’ve been enjoying making new memories with my boys this year.  My 4-year-old wanted to carve “scary” faces in his pumpkin, and my two-year old tried to carry one that was bigger than he was to be like his big brother.  They had a ball decorating the trunk with cobwebs for trunk or treat (which was a new concept to me, but I totally loved it!) and decorating the house.

It’s easy to get caught up in the getting part of Halloween and not pay as much attention to the giving, especially for the kids.  That’s why I was so amazed by my four-year old yesterday.  As trunk or treat was coming to a close we had run out of candy to give out.  He took big handfuls of candy from his pail and put them back in the bucket to give out.  Then he told his little brother “we have to give some back so that everybody can have some” and he took some from his little brother’s pail too.  I couldn’t have been more proud.

We took a family walk last night and my four-year old wanted to talk about Halloween the entire way.  He wanted each of us to say what we liked about Halloween inside the house, and then what we liked about Halloween outside the house.  Hearing him describe everything in such detail and with such excitement was a great father – son moment.

The holiday season has begun, and it’s a great time for Today’s Dads.  I hope you enjoy it.  Happy Halloween!

Diaper Emergency! A Guide For New Fathers

27 Oct

There are numerous stigmas that Today’s Dads have to face.  One of the most common assumptions is that Dads are unwilling and/or incapable of changing diapers.  How ridiculous is that?  Today’s Dads are more than capable and willing to do their share of the diaper duty.

Now for new Dads there are two realities you are about to discover.  One you are going to change A LOT of diapers.  Two, they aren’t always going to work the way they are supposed to.

So without further ado, here is a guide for all of Today’s Dads to the five categories of diaper emergency. Continue reading

A Little Extra Time For The Kids

24 Oct

I took the day off from work last week to build my kids a swing set.  The first page of the instructions said it would take two adults approximately 12 hours to build.  When I opened the box I wondered if someone had robbed a hardware store.  I’ve never seen so many little packages of nuts and bolts.

Needless to say my enthusiasm for the project was waning.

Then, here came my two little helpers.  They were so excited for the playground, and really eager to help.  I had to promise my oldest one that there would still be plenty of work to do when he got home from school to get him to go.

It’s amazing how easily your kids can change your attitude.

When he got home from school he went straight to the back yard.  I was barely able to get him to go in for lunch, and forget about taking a nap!  He wasn’t leaving my side.  He loved using the hammer, holding boards in place, and of course the cordless drill.  I loved his look of satisfaction, the pride he took in doing things himself, and sharing the experience with him. I’m Really Proud Of You Daddy

17 Oct

This past Saturday was yard work day at our house.  We’re getting ready for my youngest son’s second birthday party and the landscaping was getting a little out of control.

Fortunately for me, my two little helpers love yard work!  The boys took a water break while I kept working, and after a couple minutes my older son came up to me and said “wow you did a lot while I was drinking my water, I’m really proud of you daddy!”.

I’m really proud of you daddy……

Those are some pretty powerful words from such a little person.  It was another one of those great father/son moments that I’ve dreamed about since I found out we were expecting.

I’m really proud of you daddy……

Don’t Be Afraid To Be A Dorky Dad, Your Kids Will Love It!

11 Oct
A Force FX Lightsaber photograph taken in low ...

Image via Wikipedia

Are you afraid to be a dorky dad?  Do you worry about being seen playing air guitar?  Don’t want anyone to know about the lightsaber fights you have in your living room?  Terrified if your kid says “do the voice” while you’re walking through the mall?

Don’t let your ego get in the way of having a truly great time with your kids!

It’s true you may get some funny looks.  It’s true there may be some snickers.  It’s also true that your children, especially young children will LOVE you for it!

We can all take a lesson from the unbridled enthusiasm that children experience in life.  They don’t care who’s watching.  They don’t care who’s listening.  What they care about is the special bond they share with you, and the joy they get from that.

Nurturing Self-Esteem In A Hyper Critical Society

6 Oct

Picture these scenarios:Self-Esteem

Your teenage daughter comes home from school, devastated because she didn’t get the lead in the school play.  Your son has just had his heart broken for the first time.  Your middle school child got cut from the soccer team.  Your kindergartener wet his pants on the playground and was teased.

Ego’s are bruised.  Self-esteem is on the floor.

What is Today’s Dad to do?  How can Today’s Dad nurture self-esteem in our hyper critical society?

Today’s Dad is parenting in what I call a hyper critical society.  The 24 hour news cycle lets commentators sit on TV all day and criticize every decision and event in the world.  Sports talk radio can spend days criticizing a team after a win let alone how negative they are after a loss, and have you ever read the comment section at the bottom of a story you read online?  Our society demands excellence, and categorizes anything less as failure.  Continue reading
